🕯 The Grief No One Talks About (and Why We Must)

When we think of grief, we often picture the loss of a person we love. And while that is a deep and profound sorrow, there are other losses — quieter, less acknowledged — that can shake our world just as deeply.

This is the grief no one talks about.

It’s the loss of a job that carried your sense of purpose.
The end of a friendship you thought would last forever.
The decline of your own health, and the independence that slips away with it.
The passing of a beloved pet who was your comfort and constant.
The life you imagined for yourself that will never come to be.

These losses are often called disenfranchised grief — grief that society doesn’t always recognize or validate. You might hear, “At least you can get another job,” or “It’s just a pet,” or “You should be over it by now.” These dismissals can make the pain even heavier, because now you’re grieving in silence.

But your grief is real. It matters. And it deserves to be honored.

Every loss changes us. Every goodbye reshapes our story. And the ache you feel is proof that what was lost had meaning.

So if you’re carrying a loss that no one sees, I want you to know this:
You don’t need permission to grieve it. You don’t need to justify it. You only need to allow yourself the compassion you’ve been withholding.

And if you can, speak it out loud. Share it with someone safe. Break the silence so others know they’re not alone in their unspoken losses.

When we name our hidden griefs, we give them light — and in doing so, we give ourselves the chance to heal.

Let’s keep carrying that light, together.
